JUBILEE UNITED CHURCH

Location:                         Toronto, ON

Completed:                    2024

Construction Cost:     < $100,000

PROJECT BRIEF

INTERIOR ALTERATIONS to provide new accessibility ramp

Jubilee United Church was looking to improve facility accessibility and inclusion for their visiting congregation and staff. Occupants with limited mobility were experiencing challenges moving from the ground level sanctuary floor up to the raised chancel. This problem was also negatively affecting venue rentals which is an important revenue stream for the facility. It was obvious a ramp was needed and our challenge was to introduce a new permanent feature that integrated seamlessly with the existing architecture of the church.

We engaged the end user through a series of public consultations. Together we explored various layout options to determine the best modification solution that addressed the needs of this very busy multi-purposes space. The new permanent ramp occupies a previously underutilized back-of-house corridor, which involved meticulous site measurements and select demolition of load bearing elements to allow for the ramp. Fixture and finishes selections were carefully considered and approved by the end user to ensure that the ramp was durable and blended in well with the surroundings.

Through careful planning and execution we were able to achieve an inconspicuous new ramp which feels like it had always been there.
